An article written last spring by Houzz contributor, Julie Kim, has some interesting things to say about aesthetically pleasing home security options.
These are her recommendations:
Improve visibility in your yard (see above). Trimming bushes and maintaining open sight lines has the dual benefit of allowing both the homeowner, as well as neighbours, to keep an eye on your yard.
Use aggregates around the house and under windows. Loose gravel makes for noisy footsteps if one is trying to be stealthy.
Plant low, thorny foliage underneath windows. When is the last time you eyed a prickly bush and thought, “Yeah I’d like to crawl through that”.
Install outdoor lighting. There have never been more options for illuminating your yard! Lights come in many styles, and options include solar-powered and motion-activated units.
Watch out for each other. Part of being a good neighbour is maintaining friendly relations with those that live around you. A friend is much more likely to take action if they seem something suspicious. Take pride in the upkeep of your property and set a good example for others in your community.
